Open a Catholic Bible and a Protestant Bible side by side and the Old Testaments do not match. Books such as Tobit, Judith, Wisdom, Sirach, and 1–2 Maccabees appear in one and not the other — a difference that reaches back to the Greek Septuagint and forward to the debates of the Reformation.
This article will trace where the deuterocanonical books came from, why Jerome and Augustine disagreed about them, and how the Jewish, Catholic, Orthodox, and Protestant canons arrived at their present shapes. (Placeholder article — full research to come.)
